Jo’s Story
Reclaiming Her Art, Building Her Community

From volunteering in Western Sydney to creating new friendships in Orange, Jo continues her lifelong journey of helping others.
Jo is a proud Biripi woman who recently made Orange her home - and she’s already becoming part of the community. She has that rare gift of making people feel welcome, whether she’s sharing a yarn, cooking a meal, or simply offering a smile that says, “You belong here.”
Bringing people together is at the heart of who Jo is. She loves cooking with others, swapping cultural dishes, and creating moments where everyone feels included. She’s equally at home in the garden, in the kitchen, or out in the community - always learning something new and always ready to pass that knowledge on. Teaching comes naturally to her. So does kindness.
Jo is also a strong advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. She has spent years volunteering across Campbelltown and Sydney South West, supporting people at community events, helping the public during elections, and stepping in wherever an extra pair of hands is needed. Service is part of her story … and part of her joy.
Although Jo is an independent woman, she appreciates having a little support around her as she settles into a new town and builds new connections. With HavenDoor beside her, she’s restarting something that has always brought her pride: her art.
Jo paints beautiful Aboriginal artworks, each piece carrying culture, story, and identity. She’s now working toward selling her art again and sharing it with the wider community.
Looking ahead, Jo is full of plans. She’s using sign language with friends and is excited to teach others. She’s also working on creating a friendship group - a space where people can come together, socialise, and support one another in the same generous way she has always supported her community.
When you ask Jo what drives her, she says it simply:
“I get great joy from helping others.”
And it shows. Every day, in small and steady ways, Jo is building connection, culture, and community — and HavenDoor is proud to walk alongside her as she continues shaping a life filled with purpose and possibility.
