Complex nursing care under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides dedicated, high-intensity health services for individuals with complex medical conditions. This specialized support is delivered by qualified nurses and trained support workers, often in a person's home or a community setting, to help them live more independently.
What is Complex Nursing Care?
Complex care is a specialist form of support available to those with a chronic or long-term health condition, who require extra assistance to manage their symptoms and complete day-to-day activities.
- Specialised care: It's a type of community nursing care for individuals with complex or chronic health conditions, such as respiratory illnesses or neurological disorders.
- Flexible delivery: Services are delivered flexibly in the participant's home or other community settings, when and where they are needed.
- Goal-oriented:
The aim is to support safe and independent living by helping participants manage their health needs related to their disability.
Complex care can be provided either at home or in a residential nursing home, depending on the patient's preference.
How Complex Care is Funded by the NDIS
The NDIS will fund complex care if the support is considered "reasonable and necessary" and is directly related to a person's disability. Funding is typically provided through the following budget categories:
- Core Supports: Can fund high-intensity daily personal activities and community nursing care.
- Capacity Building Supports: May fund nursing services that focus on developing skills for greater health independence.
- Capital Supports:
Can cover assistive technology, such as mobility aids, or home modifications related to complex needs.
The NDIS does not fund all health-related supports. Mainstream health services, such as hospitals or post-acute care, are responsible for medical conditions not directly caused by the disability.
